Deer Caught In Headlights

I am a frightened doe
caught in headlights,
mesmerized by
shimmering fantasies
you dazzle before me,
frightened by temptation,
certain I should bolt
as the wild doe would
when she sniffs man
behind the blinding light.

Even knowing the lure
of your seductive trap
I am flattered you woo me,
fill your poems and legends
with subtle hints of me,

To be immortalized
in legend and myth
beside the femme fatales
of history, the tempting Eve,
sultry Delilah, wily Cleopatra,
the graceful Helen of Troy.

Banish the smile from my lips
for who would know 'twas me
except the poet and I?
